Corrosion Inhibitors – Your Essential Guide

Corrosion inhibitors are an essential component of many liquids, and are in use everyday in all sorts of environments,

They work by decreasing the rate at which metals and alloys corrode when added to a fluid or gas.  This means that liquids can flow over and through metal components and pipes, vastly reducing the amount of corrosion caused by the liquid.

Anodic corrosion inhibitors work by coating the metal with a protective layer of chromates, in order to stop Rust Inhibitor rust.  If the concentration of chromates isn’t right, the metal can start pitting, and the protective layer may not offer enough protection.

Cathodic corrosion inhibitors work by either slowing down the cathodic reaction which causes corrosion, or by negating the effects of the cathodic reaction.  Oxygen scavengers are chemicals that react with dissolved oxygen to reduce corrosion.

Mixed inhibitors are a combination of anodic and cathodic inhibitors, to provide an even more effective protection against corrosion.  When combined with ascorbic acid, mixed inhibitors can dramatically slow down the rate of corrosion by removing dissolved oxygen.  This is particularly effective in boiler systems.

Corrosion inhibitors are found in many everyday items, from lubricants for garden equipment, and bicycle oil, to heating systems and detergents, and all do the same sort of job.

Pipelines, such as those carrying water or gas, are often in remote locations, or under the sea, and so need to be durable so that a minimum amount of maintenance is required.  By adding sufficient and appropriate corrosion protection, the pipeline can be effective and efficient for much longer.

Paint is used on a variety of surfaces, including metal, and on structures exposed to the elements.  Without the right sort of corrosion inhibitors, the paint would cause the metal to start to corrode and rust.  Bridges, and other construction projects have to be treated with the right sort of corrosion protection if they are to survive the weather.

Corrosion inhibitors are commonly used in engines. This is because there are a lot of metal parts that work in conjunction with each other, and without the appropriate lubrication will wear out, and not perform properly.  Without the appropriate corrosion prevention, however, the oils and fluids that are designed and used to protect the engine will actually start to corrode the engine. Fuels also have corrosion inhibitors added to them, to prevent the fuel storage tanks, as well as the car fuel tank, and fuel pumps in petrol stations, from rusting.
